Kawhi still a work in progress (1:16)

Kawhi Leonard on his expectations for the season, and the competitive Western Conference: "It's always the same expectations for myself; try to come in, be a leader, the best player I can be. I'm a team guy. So we're all focused on getting to April, and the playoffs, and working to get a championship. That's why I'm playing this game: to get the ultimate goal. From what I've learned just playing in this league, it's not about who you're facing. It's about what's within yourself and your team. If you guys are going to become better, [you have to] execute at the right level. So, none of that matters to me. I just focus on the Spurs, and make sure I have the best team. Then when we face them that night, then that's what we have to deal with. It's really just us moving as a collective group, and just getting better each and every day."

Kawhi Leonard spent time in Beijing today with the Chinese media. Here's what Leonard had to say about how he's preparing for the upcoming season: "Everyone saw how it ended. [The offseason] started off slow, just rehabbing, getting back 100 percent. But obviously, just everything like I say every year. Just come back a better player, better man, better leader, and just work on my game. I respect it. I'm very passionate about it. I love to play. This is why I work so hard at it. [I've been working on] just everything, shooting. You'll see. You'll see next season. Something always new comes."

Racking up MVP honors

In the past 16 years, the NBA has given out back-to-back MVP awards on five different occasions, with Stephen Curry being the most recent back-to-back winner. Will Russell Westbrook be able to duplicate his 2016-17 success and earn the award for a second straight season?

Another MVP award for Russ?

The top-four MVP candidates from a season ago also have a strong chance of winning the award in 2017-18, according to the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. Former teammates Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant have the highest odds to take home the honor.

The NBPA announced its Players Voice Awards on Friday, and three San Antonio Spurs received honors highlighted by Kawhi Leonard, who won Best Defender. Summer Forecast: West standings for 2017-18

The Spurs didn't have the big summer they may have hoped for, but 50-win seasons are almost automatic in San Antonio. Did they do enough to hold on to the No. 2 spot in the West?

NBA China announced Wednesday that two-time NBA All-Star Kawhi Leonard will visit China from Aug. 18-24 to support the growth of basketball in the country, and coach top youth talent from the region at The NBA Academy Zhejiang. This would mark Leonard's first trip to China. Leonard will host a basketball clinic in Beijing for select migrant school students as part of the league's celebration of its partnership with CCTV. Leonard will also meet fans at NBA 5v5, the league's five-on-five tournament for elite players in China, and visit Tencent's studio in Beijing.

Spurs' complete 2017-18 regular-season schedule

The Spurs will open at home on Wednesday, Oct. 18 vs. the Timberwolves. The defending champion Warriors will make their first trip of the season to the AT&T Center on Thursday, Nov. 2.

The month of March won't be particularly kind to the Spurs considering they have consecutive road meetings at Golden State, OKC and Houston during a stretch from Mar. 8 through Mar.12.

Michael C. Wright ESPN Staff Writer

Five of San Antonio's first seven games are on the road, with the last road outing of that stretch on Oct.30 at Boston, followed by a home matchup with Golden State in Nov. 2. The fact Tony Parker won't be ready will make that early part of the schedule difficult as San Antonio works new point guards into the mix. Patty Mills is capable of starting, but there's a good chance the Spurs bring him off the bench and start rising second-year man Dejounte Murray.
