Great line by Joe Maddon after beating the Nationals on Monday while fielding the youngest starting lineup in baseball this season as several players were in Triple-A until recently: "If this is a spring training lineup we might get a call (from the league office)." In spring games teams are required to have at least four regulars start in every game.

Watch Javy Baez discuss his game against the Nationals on Monday. He made two great catches, struck out 3 times then had two late hits in the Cubs 5-4 win. His catch in foul ground was one of the best he's ever had.

The Cubs beat the Nats 5-4 behind one of their better efforts of the season -- at least until the ninth inning. It began with Willson Contreras hitting a lead off home run then continued on the mound as Eddie Butler and the Cubs relief staff got the job done over the first 8 innings. The Cubs added three in the ninth and needed every one of those runs. Hector Rondon and Wade Davis combined to give up 4 in the bottom of the inning but Davis got Zimmerman to strike out to end a heart stopping game.

Albert Almora's successful squeeze play tonight was the third RBI by the Cubs via a bunt play this season, tied for the most in the majors. In fact, since Joe Maddon took over as manager in 2015 the Cubs have the most RBI (16) in baseball on bunt plays.

The Cubs traded DFA'd pitcher Zac Rosscup to the Rockies for righty Matt Carasiti. He's 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA and 13 saves at Triple-A this season. He made 19 MLB appearances for the Rockies last year. He was drafted in the 6th round in 2012 out of St. John's.

Schwarber not surprised Cubs demoted him

Kyle Schwarber made his first public comments Monday since the Cubs sent him down to Triple-A, saying he wasn't surprised by the demotion but "that's obviously something that you don't want to have, and it ticks you off a little bit."

Cubs' Contreras hits HR in leadoff role debut

Willson Contreras -- the eighth leadoff hitter for the Cubs this season -- hit a home run Monday in his first at-bat in the No. 1 spot. Contreras' teammate Anthony Rizzo also hit a homer in his first leadoff at-bat last week.

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

Like Anthony Rizzo before him Willson Contreras hit a lead off home run in his very first at-bat leading off a game in his career. He took Gio Gonzalez deep on a 3-1 pitch to start the game making him the 3rd different Cub to hit a lead off HR this season.
